Frederick Simpson Coburn was a distinguished geologist and mineralogist whose research led to the discovery of the source of the Pecos River, a major tributary of the Rio Grande. He studied at the University of Virginia and was a professor there from 1894 to 1926. In 1894 he married Edith May Dyer, although she died in 1905. He served as vice-president of the American Geographical Society from 1917 to 1919, and as vice-president of the Geological Society of America from 1919 to 1923.
